Experience the unparalleled snap and resilience of the Master Xu Laosan Stiff Wolf Hair Brush. Handcrafted by the renowned brush maker Xu Laosan, this brush is an essential tool for artists looking to bring bold, expressive energy to their Xieyi (freehand) paintings and calligraphy.

Made from premium stiff wolf (weasel) hair, the bristles possess a natural elasticity that instantly springs back to a sharp point. This remarkable stiffness provides exceptional control, making it the perfect brush for executing the traditional structural "bone method" of Chinese painting.

Whether you are utilizing one-sided brush loading to create a dynamic interplay of ink and water, or painting crisp, powerful lines for an ink wash landscape, this brush will respond beautifully to your hand.

Select Your Size Variant:

Choose the bristle length that best suits your creative flow from the dropdown menu above.

  • Long Bristle (2-1/8" / 5.4 cm): The perfect balance of flexibility and control. Ideal for painting bamboo stalks, mid-length strokes, and foundational landscape contouring.

  • Extra-Long Bristle (2-5/8" / 6.6 cm): Designed for maximum drama and continuous flow. Exceptional for painting long, sweeping wild orchid leaves, weeping willow branches, and expressive, unbroken calligraphic lines.

Instructor's Pro Tip: Shaping for Watercolor Washes

Many students ask me how to achieve a flat brush shape for watercolor washes using a traditional round brush. The long, resilient bristles on this specific wolf hair brush make it uniquely suited for this technique. Here is how to easily transform it:

  1. Moisten the bristles: Fully saturate the brush in clean water, then gently squeeze out the excess so it remains full moisturize, but not dripping wet.

  2. Flatten the Tip: Using your fingertips or the flat surface of your mixing palette, fan out the brush tip on the bottom side and top 2 sides to flat it out.

  3. Stroke to shape: Do not use circular or scrubbing motions. Simply pull the brush across your palette from left to right (or inside out) in one continuous direction on both sides.

  4. Apply your wash: Once flattened, keep using the broad face of the brush directly against the paper to lay down your wash. You can always rotate the brush to use its chisel edge or narrow tip when you need to switch back to fine accents!

Care Instructions: Rinse gently in cool water immediately after use. Hang the brush by its end loop to dry perfectly straight, ensuring the stiff wolf hair retains its exquisite point for your next painting session.
